about

This is an extremely rare recording!

These tracks are from an album that I recorded over 2 days in early January 2000 but was never able to release. In fact, I went into debt because of this production. We were recording stereo direct to DAT, which means each of these tracks are truly one take with absolutely no studio corrections. This also means it was mixed by Richard Barron in real time, as we were performing. We actually recorded 7 or 8 songs but none of the other songs were salvageable.

BUT, there is some absolutely burning playing on these 4 songs.

One of the things that makes this recording so rare is that it features pianist Greg Kurstin. At the time, Greg was quite a staple in the Los Angeles jazz scene and was a rising star. Kurstin's playing on these tracks is absolutely stunning! He has since gone on to great success as a Grammy Winning songwriter and producer, working with stars like Adele, Kendrick Lamar and Kelly Clarkson.

This recording also features bassist Tony Dumas in his prime. Kurstin, Dumas and drummer Willie Jones, III lock in and drive these tunes like a freight train on fire!

Also, this recording stands as an early document of my long-time friendship, on and off the bandstand, with saxophonist Keith Fiddmont. His supportive, agile and passionate playing on this recording is magical.

I suppose it also is the missing link in my own recording history as a leader. My first album, "There's Only Me," was recorded in June of 1997, then this recording in January 2000, and my next recording wouldn't be until 2004 with the great pianist Bob Florence.

I hope you enjoy "Interdependence." It brings me a lot of joy reflecting on it's creation. The performances are as fresh as the day they were created and hold a great deal of integrity.

Peace,
Brian Swartz
