about

Brian Swartz's 1st album as a leader, "There's Only Me," features 7 of his original instrumental compositions/arrangements with his sextet.

From the original liner notes:
"There's Only Me" is the culmination of over two years of work. Each song represents a very personal life experience of mine as do most of my compositions. I consider composition to be therapy as I can express many feelings through music that I wouldn't necessarily be able to express verbally. Hopefully, the listener will be able to relate to these compositions in the manner intended.

The making of "There's Only Me" has been a tremendous emotional and educational experience. I've tried to capture and convey some very personal moments. It is my sincere hope that my message has been received and acknowledged by you, the listener.

This album is dedicated to the memory of my father,
Lawrence Gene Swartz

-Brian Swartz May, 2000

"Years ago, I was one of the 'fortunate' to have had the opportunity to be one of Brian Swartz's teachers. It has been personally exciting and gratifying for me to witness both his musical and personal growth.

Serious jazz musicians will forever find themselves on a constant quest - seeking a manner to express themselves in the most sincere and direct way possible. In a truly specific sense, the jazz musician's creative output is a story of - and to - themselves. This output will always depict the very essence of this lifelong quest; joyfulness, remorse, beauty, pain, anticipation, skepticism, longing, indecision - the list goes on and on.

In Brian's case, it's only the beginning...

On listening to this, his first Compact Disc project, one will realize that we have a sensitive, flexible, humble and yes, creative mind on our hands. His tunes, as well as the performances, are both genuine and appealing. His natural affinity for song is illustrated in his heartfelt ballads and his up-tempo tunes takes one to some particularly fresh territory."
